In the state of Texas, Class A CDL students are required to pass four multiple-choice tests at their local DPS office before proceeding to the Behind The Wheel (BTW) portion of their training. These tests cover Texas Special Requirements, General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination Vehicles.
The Texas Special Requirements test covers state-specific rules and regulations, while the General Knowledge test assesses the student’s understanding of general trucking concepts, such as vehicle inspection, cargo handling, and driving procedures. The Air Brakes test evaluates the student’s knowledge of air brake systems, including inspection and operation, and the Combination Vehicles test assesses their understanding of handling combination vehicles, such as tractor-trailers.
Once a student has successfully passed all four tests, they are eligible to begin the BTW portion of their training, where they will receive hands-on instruction and practice driving skills under the guidance of a certified instructor.
We begin by providing students with an overview of the CDL permit process, including the types of CDLs available and the specific requirements for each. We then cover the rules and regulations for commercial driving, such as federal and state regulations, hours of service, and safety procedures.
Our instructors then provide students with a thorough review of the information covered on the CLP exam, such as vehicle inspections, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving skills. This will be classroom instruction.
To help students prepare for the exam, we provide them with study materials, such as practice tests and flashcards, and conduct mock exams to help them familiarize themselves with the testing process.
Throughout the CLP course, we assess each student’s progress and provide feedback to help them improve. Our goal is to ensure that our students are fully prepared to pass the CLP exam and are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the trucking industry.

Our Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pass the CLP exam and begin their journey as professional truck drivers.

We start by breaking down the inspection process into a logical sequence of parts, so that students can easily remember and understand each step. Our instructors demonstrate each part of the inspection process, and then students are given the opportunity to practice what they’ve learned on their own.

At Ace Trucking Academy, we provide comprehensive and hands-on training for Behind The Wheel (BTW) Range training. Our program is designed to give students the knowledge and experience they need to master the essential skills for operating a commercial truck and passing their CDL road test. Some of these skills that we teach are Straight Line Backing, Offset and Parallel Parking.
Our instructors begin by introducing students to the basic components of a commercial truck, including the engine, transmission, and brakes. They then teach the proper techniques for starting, accelerating, braking, and shifting gears, and provide ample hands-on practice with these skills.
Once students have a solid understanding of the foundational skills, our instructors move on to range training. This part of the program focuses on maneuvering the commercial truck in a confined space, such as a parking lot or range. We teach students how to control the truck and perform maneuvers such as Straight Line backing, Offset Backing, and Parallel Parking.
During the BTW Range training, students receive one-on-one instruction and support from our experienced instructors. Our instructors provide constant feedback and guidance to help students identify areas of weakness and improve their skills throughout the course.
We also use a range of training tools and techniques to enhance the learning experience. For example, we use cones and markers to create a simulated range environment that students can practice in. We also use video recordings of student performances to help them identify areas where they need to improve.

At Ace Trucking Academy, our Behind The Wheel (BTW) Road training program is designed to provide students with comprehensive instruction and hands-on experience in driving a commercial truck on the open road. Our program covers a range of skills and techniques, including turning, stopping, speed and space management, road regulations, driving behaviors, railroad crossings, and emergency stops.
For students learning to drive a manual transmission truck, we also cover upshifting and downshifting gears, gear recovery, manual transmission driving behaviors, and advanced shifting techniques.
Our experienced instructors provide one-on-one instruction and support to help students build their skills and confidence behind the wheel. We begin by introducing students to the basic controls and operations of the commercial truck, including the engine, transmission, brakes, and steering.
We then move on to more advanced driving skills, such as turning, merging, and navigating through traffic. Our instructors teach students how to maintain proper speed and following distance, and how to respond to different road and traffic conditions.
Throughout the BTW Road training program, we emphasize the importance of safe driving practices, including proper lane changing, signaling, and scanning for potential hazards.
